What is smoov?
Smoov is a personal design venture, I created in 2025, to explore, showcase and develop my skills in 3D design, and product development. The brand focuses on custom 3D printed lamps, blending modern aesthetics with functional design. Every product is designed, printed and assembled entirely by myself — from the initial concept sketches and CAD modelling to the final 3D print, finishing, and packaging.
The project demonstrates my ability to manage the full design-to-production pipeline, including prototyping, material experimentation, and branding. Smoov also operates as an active Etsy shop, where I handle product photography, listing design, and customer communication, providing experience in both creative direction and small business management.
The Brand
From Concept
The product sketch for the Smoov Lantern was created to capture the essence of its modern, calming aesthetic in a simple yet expressive way. I chose a clean, minimalist drawing style to mirror the smooth, flowing curves of the lamp and emphasize its balanced proportions. The sketch focuses on the overall form rather than fine detail, allowing the shape and silhouette to communicate the product’s character — soft, inviting, and contemporary.
Moving into 3D Modelling
Blender played a central role in shaping the final design of the Smoov Lantern. Instead of starting with physical prototypes, I built the entire form digitally. Which allowed me to experiment freely with curves, angles, and proportions until the lamp felt visually calm and well-balanced. The software made it possible to test how light would interact with the translucent PETG surfaces, helping me refine the design so the lantern would give off the soft, ambient glow I envisioned. Modelling it in 3D also ensured that every part—from the shade to the base—was engineered with the precision needed for clean, reliable 3D printing.
3D Printing and Slicing
Once the 3D model was complete, I exported it as a .3mf file and imported it into Bambu Studio to prepare it for printing. This stage allowed me to fine-tune the internal structure, wall thickness, and infill settings to ensure the lamp would print cleanly while remaining durable and lightweight. Using Bambu Studio also gave me full control over layer height, support placement, and surface quality, helping me achieve the smooth, consistent finish the Smoov Lantern is known for. By adjusting the slicing parameters to suit both PETG and PLA components, I could optimise print time without compromising strength or aesthetics, ensuring each lantern prints reliably and to a high standard.
Final Product
After printing each component and carefully assembling the lamp, the Smoov Lantern comes together exactly as envisioned — a modern, calming piece that feels both refined and inviting. The translucent PLA shade diffuses the glow beautifully, while the base provides a clean, stable foundation. The braided cable, switch, and plug complete the design, giving it a polished, professional finish. Every assembled lantern carries the character of a handcrafted product, made with intention and care from start to finish. Seeing the digital concept become a fully realised, functional light source is the final step in the process, bringing warmth, softness, and thoughtful design into the spaces it brightens.
